New figures have revealed Australia’s most pet-loving suburbs, from apartment strongholds in Sydney and Melbourne, to leafy suburbs in South Australia and coastal areas in Queensland and Western Australia. Leading pet insurance provider Petsy – winner of the 2025 Canstar ‘Outstanding Value for Pet Insurance’ award – has ranked the top five suburbs for dog and cat ownership across the major states, with some surprising results.
The suburb-level analysis, drawn from Petsy’s national pet insurance data, offers a unique glimpse into which areas Aussies are most embracing furry family members.
In NSW and Victoria, square-metre limits are no deterrent to pet ownership. Petsy discovered that many of the top pet-loving suburbs are also known for strata living. In NSW, Rosebery in the city’s inner west and beachside Maroubra tie at first place, while inner-city Alexandria and Marrickville follow in third and fourth place, respectively. Some of the most devoted pet parents in Victoria are in Melbourne CBD, South Yarra and St Kilda.
In South Australia and Western Australia, the trend flips – where it’s all about space, backyards and beach access. Adelaide’s Woodcroft and Mount Barker in the Hills – dotted with backyards and green spaces – take out the State’s top spots. Western Australia’s Scarborough and Waikiki are attractive for dog owners thanks to their beachside locations, while Baldivis is a growing young-family suburb.
Meanwhile, half of the top five ranking in Queensland for furry family members are in the Gold Coast, with Pimpama, Southport and Coomera making the top two ranking.
Petsy Founder Monica Limanto says: “Our data has given us a fun glimpse into the suburbs where pets are most loved. In the eastern states, it’s clear apartment living isn’t holding back households from embracing pet life.
“At Petsy, it’s also good news that many households are choosing to protect their pets like family. Pet insurance helps cover vet bills for unexpected incidents, giving owners peace of mind and helping them say ‘yes’ to treatment when their pets need it most.”
